Read It

Have your child read the passage below:

I Broke a Spoke

It was sunny today, so I trade in my sled for a bike.

First, I ride to the store to buy a Coke.

Next, I take on the big hill.

My ride is going well, until I'm near the top. I hear a crack. Shoot, I broke a spoke!

A spoke is a thin metal bar that keeps the wheel strong. If you break a spoke, it may get stuck in the wheel or make the wheel go sideways.

I try not to cry. Luckily, the bike could still work. But now I need to fix that silly spoke.

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Can you explain what is a bike spoke?

  2. What did the author buy at the store?
