Today we're working on Magic E words like "joke" and "broke." If your child needs more practice with this sound, start here.
Â
Now on to the lesson…
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
broke wake woke ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to the "-oke" sound 3 times: ...oke
...oke
...oke
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: joke
poke
woke
Coke
smoke
spoke
choke
broke
provoke
slowpoke
Read It
Have your child read the passage below:
I Broke a Spoke
Â
It was sunny today, so I trade in my sled for a bike.Â
Â
First, I ride to the store to buy a Coke.
Â
Next, I take on the big hill.
Â
My ride is going well, until I'm near the top. I hear a crack. Shoot, I broke a spoke!
Â
A spoke is a thin metal bar that keeps the wheel strong. If you break a spoke, it may get stuck in the wheel or make the wheel go sideways.
Â
I try not to cry. Luckily, the bike could still work. But now I need to fix that silly spoke.Â
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Can you explain what is a bike spoke?
What did the author buy at the store?
