The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Lately we've been working on different “-ough” sounds. Today we're going to review words like “tough," where it makes an “uff” sound.
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
flip
fluff
tough
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and say the word "rough" three times (like "ruff"):
rough
rough
rough
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
tough
toughen
tough it out
tough love
rough draft
rougher
roughly
enough

Read It
This one's a hard one (!), but have your child try to read the passage below out loud:
Tough Words?
I thought I knew how words should go,
Like though and even dough.
But then I met that silly word tough,
And suddenly, things got really rough!
I had to cry and say, “Enough!”
This spelling stuff is truly tough!
Why does cow sound just like plough,
But plough and tough don't match, somehow?
And if hiccup is just another way to spell hiccough,
Why does my brain just want to give up?
So hats off to all the kids who try,
To read these words and wonder why.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What was today's story about?
Can you think of three more words that rhyme with "tough?"
