We've already worked on the “oo” sound in “zoo.” Today we're working on words like “good” and “book.” If your child needs more practice with this sound, start here.
Now on to the lesson…
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
wood stood stand ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to the word "good" and say it 3 times: good
good
good
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: book
look
took
hook
wood
hood
stood
cookbook
goodwill
redwood
Read It Have your child read the passage below:
A Good Book
I took a book down from the shelf. It has a brown cover, and Mom says it is very good.
I like what a good book can do for me. A good book can transport me to new places. Books can show me how other boys and girls see the world.
A good story can hook you in. You may not even know how much time passes. You just want to keep turning the page to see what will happen.
That is the power of a good book.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What are some of the reasons the author gives for why they like books?
What does the author mean when they say a good book can “transport” them to new places?
