In December we worked on the “ow” sound in words like “snow." Today we're going to work on the other “ow” sound in words like “cow” and “now.”
Now on to the lesson…
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
smile frown clown ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to the sound and say it 3 times (as if they just hurt their hand): ow
ow
ow
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: cow
now
vow
how
chow
pow
plow
power
tower
allow
Read It Have your child read the passage below:
How Now, Brown Cow?
I wake up, brush my teeth, and towel off my face. Then I race down the hill and into the yard.
I am going to visit my pal, Carl.
Carl is a cow. A brown cow.
Carl does not run fast. He does not fetch sticks.
But he likes when we play hide and seek.
Today he starts. I turn my back and say, “ten, nine… three, two, one.” He stays in the same spot.
“Silly Carl!” I say.
Now it is my turn to hide.
I frown and think. I know! I will hide in the barn.
I am too good at this game. When I hide, Carl never finds me!
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Who is Carl?
What happens at the end of the story?
