The Lone Scone

My mom lets me pick a treat at the store.

It has to be a small one, she says, so I don't spoil my dinner.

I look at all the muffins and treats. I can't pick which one I want.

“Should I flip a coin?” my mom asks.

“No,” I say. I plead for more time.

I point at a lone scone all the way in the corner. “Is it moist?” I ask the lady.

She says yes. “Would you like me to heat it up first, or shall I wrap it up for you?” she asks.

Oh no, not another choice!

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What is a scone? Are there any clues about scones in the story?

  2. What is the author's main problem in the story?
