Daily(ish) Decodable: The word "are"

Today we're going to work on the word "are." It's a very common word, but it doesn't follow the normal spelling patterns.

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Have your child read the passage below out loud:


The Animal Game

 

“Let's play the animal game!” I said to my mom. “You have to guess my animal in five questions or less.”

 

“Okay, are you a pet?” she asked.

 

“No, I am not a pet,” I said.

 

“Are you small or big?” she asked.

 

“I am sort of big,” I said.

 

“Are you fast or slow?” she asked.

 

“I am pretty slow,” I responded.

 

“Hmm, are you a farm animal?” she asked.

 

“Yes, now you are getting close,” I said.

 

“Are you a cow?” she asked.

 

“Yes! I am a cow! Moo!”

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:


  1. Can you think of three more words that rhyme with the word "are?"

  2. In the story, do you think the mom did a good job guessing the animal? Why or why not?
