The Last Straw

Let me tell you the story of the straw that broke the camel's back.

Jimmy was a strong, happy camel, but he was old.

His owner wasn't mean. But he was in a hurry that day.

First, he put a carpet on Jimmy's back. Then came a big bunch of straw.

Jimmy could feel his knees bend underneath him. It was awful.

The owner saw one last strand of straw in the dirt. He bent to pick it up, and he set it slowly on Jimmy.

But that last straw was too much. Jimmy fell to his knees. He needed to rest.

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What happened in the story?

  2. Was it that one last straw that made Jimmy fall down on his knees, or all the other stuff that came first?
