Read It Have your child read the passage below:

Born in a Barn

An owl was born in a barn.

Owls are birds, so it came from an egg.

After it was born, it could hardly even make a hoot.

But a barn is not the worst place in the world to be born or to grow up.

First, the owl could roost in the barn rafters and stay warm.

Second, mice came into the barn to get corn, and the mommy owl could catch the mice.

Third, it wasn’t too far to jump down from the rafters. When the baby owl was strong, it could fly north to look for a place of its own.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Where was the owl born?

  2. Was the barn a good place for the baby owl to grow up? Why or why not?
