Today we’re going to work on the “-dge” sound in words like “dance” or “fence."
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
stand stance glance ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to each sound and say it 2 times (the first two should sound like "ants," as in the tiny black bugs):
...ance
...ance
...ince
...ince
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: dance
glance
prance
prince
since
wince
hence
fence
Read It Have your child read the passage below:
The Prince Can’t Dance
Today is the day of the grand ball. The king and queen are throwing it for the prince.
One problem: The prince can’t dance.
Ever since he was a small boy, the prince has felt silly when he begins to dance.
He kicks his partner. He crosses his feet. He panics.
And now he has to waltz in front of a crowd. It will be a disaster!
But then the prince calms down. He only has to dance one song. He will wince, and grin, and then it will be over. ------------------------------- Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Why does the prince have to dance today?
Why does the prince grin at the end?
