Daily(ish) Decodable: The "-ike" sound

Today we’re going to work on words such as “bike” or “like." If your child wants or need more practice on the "Magic E" and the long "i" sound, start here.

Now on to today's lesson...

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

car bike spike ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to the sound and say it 3 times: ...ike

...ike

...ike

------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: bike

like

Mike

pike

alike

spike

strike

turnpike

Read It Have your child read the passage below:

I Like to Hike

I like to hike.

But what is a hike?

A hike is kind of like a long walk. But it’s often in the woods, or you go to the top of a hill, or you go see a waterfall.

You can bring snacks in your backpack.

Sometimes you see animals. That can be fun, but I dislike seeing snakes.

Unlike me, my older brother Mike does not like hikes. He prefers to ride his bike. Or, even better, sit on the sofa and watch TV! ------------------------------- Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What is a hike?

  2. Does the author's brother like to hike? Why or why not?
