Daily(ish) Decodable: Cotton candy

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to review more words like "candy" that end with the "y" as an "ee" sound.

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Have your child read the passage below out loud (you may have to help them sound out the word "sugar"):

Cotton Candy

Have you ever had cotton candy?

It was first sold on this day over one hundred years ago.

It started as a treat at a great fair. In fact, it was called The World's Fair.

What's funny is that cotton candy was invented by a dentist! He heated sugar and then spun it around and around really fast. When the hot sugar hit the air, it became soft and fluffy, sort of like cotton.

Back then, a box of cotton candy cost twenty-five cents!

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Why is it funny that cotton candy was invented by a dentist?

  2. How much did cotton candy cost when it was invented?
