The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Today we're going to review the "ay" sound in words like "day" and "play."
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
run
play
stay
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and blend the word "play" three times:

-------------------------------

day
pay
Ray

Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
May Day
Today is Thursday. It's also the first day in May!
When I was a kid, we would make May Day baskets. We put candy, a small craft, or other little treats inside the baskets. Then we would leave a basket on the front doorstep of our best pals. We would ring the doorbell and then run. If we got all the way around the house, then we were “safe.”
That's an old custom, and May Day is not as big of a holiday as it was when I was a kid. But it was silly and fun! Plus you got treats out of it…
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
How did the author celebrate May Day?
In this context, what does the word "custom" mean?
