Daily(ish) Decodable: The "-ame" words

Today we’re going to work on “-ame” words like “game” or “fame." If your child needs a refresher on how the "Magic E" works at the end of words, I'd recommend starting here.

Now on to today's lesson...

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

fire flame game ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to the sound and say it 3 times: ...ame

...ame

------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: game

name

fame

same

shame

blame

flame

frame

became

nickname

Read It Have your child read the passage below:

The Name Game

My class is going to play The Name Game today!

You start by saying your name and your favorite color. Then, the next person has to say that person’s name and keep going.

Let’s say Jane starts. She says, “My name is Jane and my favorite color is green.”

The next person says, “That’s Jane and her favorite color is green. My name is Lars and my favorite color is red.”

Then, the next person says, “Jane’s favorite color is green. That’s Lars and his favorite color is red. My name is Kurt and my favorite color is black.”

Just keep going like this. Over time, the game will get harder and harder!

------------------------------- Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. If you kept going with The Name Game from the story, what would you have to say next?

  2. What was Jane's favorite color?
