Today we're working on words like “radio" and “audio” This is a tricky one, so remind your child that the “io” combination can make a lot of different sounds.
Now on to the lesson…
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
foot big toe radio ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to and say the name "Mario" three times: Mar io
Mar io
Mario
------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words (some of these are similar but not identical--help your child hear the differences):
Wario
bio
patio
audio
radio
ion
lion
riot
idiot
Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
The Radio
Today is Flag Day, the day we honor the adoption of our national flag. It was first adopted on June 14, 1777.
Our flag has thirteen stripes, six white and seven red. It also has fifty white stars, one for each state.
When President Warren Harding spoke at a Flag Day event in 1922, the radio was getting more and popular day by day.
And when that speech was put on the radio, Harding became him the first president to speak to people (“pee-pup”) over the radio.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What day is it today?
Who was the first president to speak over the radio?
