Daily(ish) Decodable: "Where" and "there"

Today we're working on the words “where” and “there.” These words are partially decodable, but they do NOT follow the normal “Magic E” rule.

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

stair where step ------------------------------- Say It Have your child point to and say the word "there" 3 times (it should rhyme with "chair" or "stair"): there

there

there

------------------------------- Blend It Have your child read these words: where

anywhere

somewhere

everywhere

Where is?

Where's?

Where to?

Read It

Have your child read the passage below:

Little Dog

Oh where, oh where has my little dog run?

Oh where, oh where can he be?

With his ears cut short and his tail cut long,

Oh where, oh where can he be?

I think he went there,

To the river side,

Under the willow trees,

A place so nice,

So shady and quiet,

Where you can listen to bees.

Oh where, oh where has my little dog run?

Oh where, oh where can he be?

With his ears cut short and his tail cut long,

Oh where, oh where can he be?

I think he went down,

Into the town park,

Where children like to play!

They love to play tag,

And he likes to bark,

Until the end of the day.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Can you describe the dog in the story? What did the story say he looked like?

  2. Where did the little dog run?
