The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
The “-ough” combination can make a lot of different sounds. Today we're working on words like “tough” where it makes an “uff” sound.
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
stuff
things
tough
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and say the word "tough" three times (like "tuff"):
tough
tough
tough
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
rough day
rough luck
roughly
tough it out
toughen
tougher
enough

Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
Rubik's Cube
On this day in 1974, Erno Rubik (“roo-bick”) invented a new toy.
It was a cube. A cube is another word for a box. A cube has six sides.
Rubik's cube had six colors—white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow—one for each side. To play the game, you have to turn the cube and try to get all the colors to match on the same side.
Have you ever done it? It's not fancy, but it is very tough! It is tougher than it sounds.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Who invented the Rubik's cube?
How many sides does a cube have?
