Daily(ish) Decodable: The "y" in "gym" and "Olympic"

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

If you want to review any prior lessons, those are all freely available here

Today we're going to work on times when the "y" makes a soft "i" sound in words like "gym" or "Olympics."

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

The Olympics

The summer Olympics started last week in Paris, France. Have you been watching?

I sure have been enjoying them. The athletes are amazing. My favorites are swimming and gymnastics.

The swimmers go so fast in the pool. I bet they can swim faster than I can walk! I like it when they set new records.

The gymnasts are so strong. They can run, jump, and launch themselves into the air. They fly up, twist, and then land smoothly.

Do you have a favorite athlete so far?

Which Olympic sport is your favorite one to watch?

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. What is today's story about?

  2. What does the author say they like about watching swimming?
