Daily(ish) Decodable: The "ea" sound in "head" and "bear"

We've already worked on the “ea” sound in “eat.” 

 

But today we're going to work on the soft “ea” sound in words like “head” and “bear.” 

Rhyme It Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Have your child read the passage below.


Leap Day

 

It takes about 365 days for our planet—Earth—to orbit the sun. (The word “orbit” means to go around.)

 

We count that as one year.

 

But it's not perfect. It really takes 365 days… plus six extra hours for Earth to orbit the sun.

 

In most years, we just forget about those extra hours. But every four years, we “leap” forward and add a day to account for those extra hours.

 

In most years, the month of February has 28 days. But we add that extra “Leap Day” at the end of the month of February.

 

And that's why there are 29 days in February this year.
