Daily(ish) Decodable: The ballpoint pen

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to review the "-oi" sound in "coin" and "point."

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

The Ballpoint Pen

Grab a pen or pencil and write this on the calendar: On June tenth of each year, it's Ballpoint Pen Day.

Before the ballpoint pen, all we had were fountain pens. They had real ink, but they were wet and messy.

The ballpoint pen was better. After watching children play marbles in a puddle, a man saw that the marbles left a small trail of water as they spun over the ground.

The man used the same ball shape for his new ink pens. They did not leak!

The rest, as they say, is written in history. And today, most pens are ballpoint pens.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. In your own words, what was today's story about?

  2. What's the difference between a fountain pen and a ballpoint pen?
