Daily(ish) Decodable: Doughnut Day

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Lately we've been working on other "-gh" sounds. Today we're going to work on words like "dough."

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

yes

no

dough

-------------------------------

Say It

Have your child point to and say the word "dough" three times (like "no" or "show"):

dough

dough

dough

-------------------------------

Blend It

Have your child read these words out loud:

doughnut

doughy

sourdough

though

although

Although it was raining, we went for a walk.

Although we got wet, the walk was memorable.

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

Doughnut Day!

Today is the first Friday in June. Do you know what that means? It means that today is Doughnut Day!

You can spell it “doughnut” or “donut.” Both are correct!

Although doughnuts are not very good for you, I sure do like to eat them.

Doughnuts are made with yeast, flour, milk, eggs, sugar, and salt. After mixing those things together, you let the dough rest and rise, and then fry them in some hot oil.

Pretty much any doughnut is tolerable… but I have found that my favorite ones have chocolate frosting and sprinkles. They are chewy and have a nice crunch on top.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. How do you make doughnuts?

  2. What are the two ways to spell "doughnut?"
