Welcome back to Read Not Guess. Today we’re going to work on the “-ly” and “ty” sounds at the end of words like “ugly” and “fifty.”
Both parent and child will need to be able to see the screen.
Let’s get started.
Sound Practice
Explain to your child that the “-ly” at the end of a word makes the last consonant say “lee.” Have them read the word “ugly” three times as they point to the letters:
ug ly
ug ly
ugly
Now explain to your child that a similar rule applies to the “-ty” sound at the end of a word. It makes the last consonant say “tee.” Have them read the word “fifty” three times as they point to the letters:
fif ty
fif ty
fifty
Did they get it right? Are they blending them smoothly by the end?
Let's keep going. Ask your child to point to the letters as they sound out the words:
sad ly
sadly
And:
bad ly
badly
And:
glad ly
gladly
And:
six ty
sixty
And:
dus ty
dusty
Now let’s try a few harder ones:
simp ly
simply
And:
quick ly
quickly
Silly Sentences
See if your child can read these:
Santa had a belly full of jelly.
The shelf was dusty.
The kitty quickly went to her bed.
My family is silly.
If they read them smoothly, great! If they stumble, have them keep practicing.
That’s it for today. We’ll see you next time.
