The "oo" Sound in Zoo

Welcome back to Read Not Guess. Today we’re going to work on the “oo” sound like in the words “zoo” or “boot.”

Both parent and child will need to be able to see the screen.

Let’s get started.

Today’s Letter Sounds

Have your child read the "oo" sound as if they just saw a shooting star or a really big piece of chocolate cake:

oo

oo

oo

Word Practice

Now we’re going to work on blending the double “o” sound in words. Your child can start slowly by saying each sound individually, but each time, they should try to say it just a bit faster.

Ask your child to say the correct sounds as they point to the letters:

z oo

zoo

And:

m oo n

moon

And:

h oo t

hoot

And:

s oo n

soon

And:

sp oo n

spoon

Silly Sentences

See if your child can read this short story:

Zack was a jazzy zebra.

He enjoys zooming in the zoo.

He zips by the goofy rabbits.

He zigs past the loony raccoons.

He zags by the barn owls too.

Zack jumps for joy as he plays all day.

If they read it smoothly, great! If they stumble, have them keep working until they get it right.

That’s it for today. We’ll see you next time,

~Chad
