The "oi" Sound

Welcome back to Read Not Guess. Today we’re going to work on the “oi” sound like in the words “oil” or “coin.”

Both parent and child will need to be able to see the screen.

Let’s get started.

Today’s Letter Sounds

Explain to your child that the "oi” letter combination makes the same sound as the word “toy.” Have them point to the letters as they read the word “boil:”

b oi l

b oil

boil

Let’s try some more:

br oi l

br oil

broil

And:

c oi n

c oin

coin

And:

j oi n

j oin

join

And:

p oi n t

point

Now finish with a couple harder ones:

t oi let

toilet

And:

n oi sy

noisy

Silly Sentences

See if your child can read these:

Where are you? Are you avoiding me?

Chicken, meat, or fish? There's no bad choice.

Please don't raise your voice.

If they stumble with these, have them keep practicing.

That’s it for today. We’ll see you next time.
