The Letters "G" and "E"

Welcome back to Read Not Guess. Today we’re going to work on the letters “G” and “E.”

Remember that we’re going to focus on the sounds the letters make. Both parent and child will need to be able to see the screen.

Let’s get started.

Today’s Letter Sounds

Today we’re going to learn the sound the letter "G" makes at the beginning of the word “guitar” or at the end of "bag."

Ask your child to make the “g” sound 3 times as they point to the letters:

g

g

g

Ask your child if they can think of any words that start with the “g” sound. If they need help, the words get, girl, and garden all start with the “g” sound.

Have them say the “g” sound 3 more times as they point to the letters:

g

g

g

Now we’re going to learn the letter "E." For now, we’re going for the soft “eh” sound as in “egg” or "met."

Ask your child to make the “eh” sound 3 times as they point to the letters:

e

e

e

Ask your child if they can think of any words that have the “eh” sound in them. If they need help, the words extra, excellent, and elephant all start with the “eh” sound.

Have them say the “eh” sound 3 more times as they point to the letters:

e

e

e

Word Practice

Now we’re going to work on “blending” letter sounds into words. Your child can start slowly by saying each sound individually, but each time, they should try to say it just a bit faster.

Ask your child to say the correct sounds as they point to the letters:

g a g

g ag

gag

By the end, make sure your child is reading the word "gag" (not "gah-guh"). Let’s do a couple more:

t a g

t ag

tag

And:

n e t

n et

net

And:

g e t

g et

get

And:

p e g

p eg

peg

By the end, check to make sure your child is reading the word as "peg," and not adding an extra sound at the end.

Sentence Challenge

If you think your child is ready, see if they can read this sentence:

Pat can pet cats.

If they read it smoothly, great! If they stumble, have them re-read it another time or two to get it right.

That’s it for today. We’ll see you next time.
