The Four-Minute Mile
For a long time, some people said it was impossible to run a mile in under four minutes.
But on this day in 1954, one man did it. His name was Roger Bannister.
Bannister was not a pro. He did not get paid. Bannister was just a medical student who ran in his free time.
On the day of the race, Bannister took a train from his job to the racetrack. It was rainy and cold that day, but he went onto the track and gave it a try.
And he did it! He finished four laps in just under four minutes.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What was the name of the first person to a run a mile in under 4 minutes?
Did Bannister get paid for his running?
