The First Telephone

On this day in 1876, a man by the name of Alexander Graham Bell got a patent for the telephone.

The first phone call was between Bell and his partner Thomas Watson. Bell said, “Mr. Watson, come here—I want to see you.” Watson was in the next room but could hear Bell over the phone.

Within the next few weeks and months, Bell would make longer and longer phone calls. With the phone, he could speak to someone who was miles away.

And that is how the first telephone was born!

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. In your own words, what was today's story about?

  2. Do you remember the name of the person who patented the telephone?
