Daily(ish) Decodable: The -ness Suffix
- 2 min read
The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Today we're going to continue our series on suffixes, working on the “-ness” sound that means "a state, quality, or condition."
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

Have your child read the passage below out loud:
Kindness Day
Kindness can spread from person to person. So… what can you do to be kind?
Can you help your mom clean up the kitchen after breakfast? That would be saintly.
Can you talk to the new kid on the playground? They would be thankful.
After school, can you help your sister with her homework? That would be brotherly.
Or, can you help your mom or dad make dinner? That would be helpful.
It's your call. But whatever it is, big or small, today is the day to be kind!
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What is the story about?
What are some examples the author gives of ways to be kind?
