Daily(ish) Decodable: The -ly Suffix

  • 2 min read

The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.

Today we're going to work on the “-ly" suffix, meaning “to act in a way that is ____."

You can review all of the prior lessons here

Rhyme It

Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?

manly

Stanley

Herbert

-------------------------------

Have your child point to and blend the word "oddly" three times:

deep / deeply

glad / gladly

cool / coolly

dark / darkly

firm / firmly

order / orderly

shy / shyly

bald / baldly

Read It

Have your child read the passage below out loud:

Holly the Jelly

Holly the jellyfish was swimming calmly in the sea. The she saw a boat sailing swiftly in the distance. She told her pal Carly, “Let's follow it, it looks fun!”

Carly gladly agreed and they started to follow the boat. Because the boat went fast, Holly and Carly had to swim quickly to keep up.

Luckily, the boat finally came to a stop, and Holly and Carly played under it until it was time to go back home.

At dinnertime, Holly told all her family about her joyful day.

-------------------------------

Explain It

Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:

  1. Was the boat going fast or slowly?

  2. What word means "someone who is kind?" (Hint: think of the suffix we worked on today.)
