- 2 min read
The Daily(ish) Decodable program uses a standard format to work through one sound per day. There are simple instructions for you, the parent or caregiver, and any words in big bold letters are meant for your child to read out loud.
Today we're going to continue our series on suffixes, working on the “-less” sound that means without.
You can review all of the prior lessons here.
Rhyme It
Parents, read the following words out loud. Then ask your child which one does NOT rhyme with the others?
dirty
mess
less
-------------------------------
Say It
Have your child point to and blend the word "endless" three times:
end less
end less
endless
-------------------------------
Blend It
Have your child read these words out loud:
unless
helpless
jobless
artless
armless
fearless
coatless
shameless

Read It
Have your child read the passage below out loud:
Less of a Hunt
At school today, my teacher writes on the board. She says that, “-less means without.”
She asks us to go on a -less hunt.
The sky is sunless, because clouds hide the sun.
The tree by the gate is leafless, because they all fell down.
A tiny bug is harmless, so we let it crawl away.
The library will be soundless when we read our books.
The water is colorless in a clear glass.
We make a big chart of our -less words. Our teacher smiles. “A -less word means without!”
My buddy Tim is clueless, because he came in late.
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
What do you think the word might be for someone without a head?
What is a "sleepless" night?
