Last week we worked on words like “table” with a hard “a” sound.
Today we're going to work on words that look similar but sound different, with the “-able” suffix at the end of words like “dependable” and “portable.”

The First Hot-Air Balloon
On this day in 1783, two men in France launched the first hot-air balloon.
The balloon was 33 feet tall, and it went as high as 3,000 feet up in the air. Nobody was in it, but it flew for one and a half miles.
Then, five months after that, in November, the two men completed the first flight with humans on board. They flew a remarkable five miles in twenty-five minutes.
I bet it was a memorable ride!
-------------------------------
Explain It
Now have your child answer a couple questions about the story:
Where was the first hot-air balloon ride?
Would you ride in a hot-air balloon? Why or why not?
